Steel is a conductor of heat. The friction caused by grinding stone creates a build-up of heat and after 30minutes or so there can be a high temperature build up on the disc. , resulting in burnt fingers and destroying all the diamonds, making the cup wheels less effective. Heat creates burn marks in the alloys and pit holes of gas in the metal body. resulting in breaking up the segment on the disc. (Destroyed disc)
Aluminium cup wheels are better because they are balance perfectly. Each disc or wheel is lathed out of a single block of aluminium and centre threaded with M14 to fit all UK market grinders.
The Segment is molecular bonded to the surface of aluminium. The segment is moulded in our factory and stamped with the turbo pattern which is very rough to take off lots of material. The mould is imprinted  to only a depth of 6mm24#,36# with a 3mm50# – 100# solid smoothing section to the bottom. Masons find this an advantage. They use a worn cup wheel disc to do fine finishing (removing saw marks from blades) They state there is no need for higher grits. One tool for the job. In fact, the man featured on our video (25 year’s experience) on our web site says “I have 2 cup wheels on the go. one to shape. when it’s worn past the turbo ridges, I use it to polish off. or to fine tune what I am doing. I find them good on lots of types of stone.(sandstone- hard & soft ) They don’t burn my fingers when I want to change them over.
